I am looking for ideas for neck woods need some ideas. I would like to use a 5 wood laminated type neck (ie Olson). I know many on OLF use a similar type consruction method. Any sizes, wood types, or pictures would be very helpful. For the rest of the guitar I am planning on using EIR with a Sitka top. Thanks! |

www.cncguitarparts.com This is John Watkins new place. He's a regular on the forum. If you're not drooling after looking at some of those necks, something's wrong with ya. ;-) Even if you want to do the lamination/carve by yourself, this will give you some pretty good ideas. Bill |

This neck is curly mahogany with a cocobolo center strip. It's actually five "pieces"; there's a fine lacewood veneer on either side of the cocobolo, but it's not very visible in the unfinished neck. 'm on a curly mahogany kick for necks these days. Too bad the stuff's so expensive, though... ![]() |

I got a couple of necks, like many other Forum members, from John Watkins. The craftsmanship is suberb. Until I venture into carving my own necks, John's necks are the way to go for me. Here are a couple that John made for me. I wanted one to resemble an Olson neck...& the other, was the 2nd 1/2 of a neck that John had in his shop, leftover from a neck he had made for one of his guitars. It's Mahogany w/ Padauk & black fiber lams... ![]() A better representation of the Padauk one in a finished state, is this pic, taken from John's site: ![]() |

Brad..Each piece of the wood strips, including the little middle Maple strip, are bordered by a thin piece of black fiber. Although hard to see in the previous photos...they are there, making a total of 9 laminations. I really lucked out getting it from John. I had seen it on his site, and out of curiosity, I asked him, what would something like that cost. He said that he just happened to have the other 1/2, So, I got it! ![]() |
